Happenings

The Period of Three Weeks Starts Next Sunday. July 24

THE PERIOD KNOWN AS THE THREE WEEKS BEGINS ON THE  "FAST OF THE 17TH  DAY OF TAMUZ".  THIS YEAR BECAUSE THE 17TH DAY OF TAMUZ FALLS ON SHABBAT, THE FAST DAY IS DEFERRED TO SUNDAY JULY 24. THE TORAH IS READ AT SHACHARIT AND MINCHA.

THE FAST DAY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM.  FOR IT IS  THE DAY ON WHICH THE ROMANS BREACHED THE WALLS ENCIRCLING JERUSALEM.  THE FAST BEGINS AT SUNRISE AND ENDS AT DARK ON THE SAME DAY.

THE SOMBER MOOD OF THE THREE WEEKS IS MARKED BY THE THREE SPECIAL HAFTOROT CHANTED ON EACH OF THE THREE SABBATHS DURING THIS PERIOD.  THE THREE WEEKS ARE

CONSIDERED DAYS OF MOURNING BY THE JEWISH PEOPLE.  WEDDINGS AND OTHER JOYOUS CELEBRATIONS DO NOT TAKE PLACE DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME.

THE THIRD SHABBAT OF THE THREE WEEKS IS CALLED SHABBAT CHAZON AND THE HAFTORAH  FOR THAT SHABBAT OFTEN INCLUDES THE STRAINS OF MUSIC FROM THE BOOK LAMENTATIONS (EICHA) WHICH IS READ ON TISHA B'AV.

THE THREE WEEKS ARE HIGHLIGHTED BY THE NINE DAYS WHICH CONCLUDE ON TISHA B'AV,.  THE 9TH DAY OF AV.  THAT DAY IS ALSO ON SHABBAT THIS YEAR, SO THE FAST OF THE 9TH OF AV IS DEFERRED TO AUGUST 14.  THE FAST  BEGINS SATURDAY NIGHT WITH MAARIV AUGUST 13 AND ENDS SUNDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 14. THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS (EICHA)  IS READ AT NIGHT ON TISHA B'AV.
